My Story

Have you ever had the fear of not accomplishing anything in life? That fear of mine manifested in a dream I had around 19 years old. I dreamt I was at my ten-year high school reunion and couldn’t remember ANYTHING I had done in the last ten years. NOTHING. That nightmare haunted me for YEARS.

I think I’ve always had two dreams: I wanted to be a writer, and I wanted to make a difference to people.

Babies placed everything on the shelf, and although I did enjoy having the demanding little buggers, the only thing I could write was a blog. In many ways, I felt like I had nothing to say. Looking back, I realize I just didn’t have the right support.

The First Problem: My Mindset

Entering my thirties, I started new habits: waking up earlier, reading and praying in the morning, exercising, setting times to write, not watching television, and the biggest of all, calling myself a writer.

It worked, and for a little bit, I started writing again, putting two manuscripts firmly in my hard drive. But as my husband’s job grew more demanding, I also felt like I was sliding into obscurity. Unable to find a writing rhythm, my stories suffered, and I became very frustrated. I wanted to blame my husband for my inability to get anything done and for me not being a published author yet, but it wasn’t his fault.

It was mine!

Determination

By 2012, I was determined to write. I started by trying to rewrite an old novel. Then I started two other novels and found little success with finishing them. In the summer of 2013, with my husband working extremely long hours and my third baby born (actually a sleeper, hallelujah!), I sat down to write a book that wouldn’t leave my head.

It took me four years to finish it. But I finished it.

Then started the hard work of figuring out what was next.

My dream to be a world-renowned writer was an immature dream. It didn’t factor in the changing industry and focused more on money and fame than anything else. I spent the next three years on Google, going to every free webinar I could possibly find. I read twenty-four business books in 2018 and listened to lecture after lecture on marketing, social media, sales, and leadership. I figured out how to set up a website, make graphic designs, find an editor, start a podcast, create journals, talk to printers, call up strange companies for advice, send out emails to complete strangers, pay a designer in Pakistan, learn to grow an email list, and ask lots of questions to people who were a few steps ahead of me.

By the end of 2019, I had two novels published, a fiction-writing prompt book, an interactive journal, and a weekly podcast. By 2021, I published my third novel, a prequel novella, and started helping others get their books done and published.
