Mindset of a successful author

The World doesn’t need another book

You’re right. The world has too many books already. In fact, the world has too many paintings as well. And songs. Why would we need any more songs when we have thousands already? We could probably stop creating sculptures as well. The museums are full and the rich people only use them as paperweights anyway. Multimedia art? Well, that’s probably getting to full levels as well. If people want pictures or painting, sculptures or drawings, books or songs, they can always just reference what the world already has. Half Priced Books would be a good place to start. Perhaps they can start a Half Priced Paintings somewhere.

Everything has already been written

Absolutely. Did you think that anything could be new? Shakespeare pretty much took all of the themes and what was left were taken by other authors way before you were born. If you thought that perhaps you might bring a unique voice to a tired subject, well, what makes you think so? You only live in a completely different time, having lived a completely different life. Your thoughts and ideas and way of looking at the world can’t be any different than someone from 100 years ago, or even 20 years ago. Humans are humans and stories are stories. Go back to mindset 1 and see that the world already has so many stories. Unless you are a completely unique person with your own DNA, with your own unique life and thoughts, then how exactly could you write in any new way about the themes we all love to read about?

There are those who have all the fans of that genre

Well, if there’s an author out there that somehow found a new topic or a new way to write about a new topic, clearly they found all of the people in the world to be there fans. And once you’re a fan of one person, then you cannot be a fan of another. Plus, the one person in this world talking or writing about the subject you want to is obviously perfect for all of the people who want to read or learn about that subject. They all vibe together, they get along, and I’m sure the fan finds that person to be the only one they would like to consult about the subject. The fact that you have a different point of view, or a different personality or a different way of speaking that might attract fans to you is ludicrous. The world can only handle a handful of experts for the 7 billion people.

Don’t allow these lies to keep you from writing your book!

The above lies are pretty prevalent in the mind of the author. Unfortunately it seems like our brains would like us to always take the easiest way out, and since writing a book takes time and energy, our mind will find all the excuses to keep us from writing. When our minds get on overwhelm, it convinces us to have a poor mindset about our books and ideas for books.

Obviously the answers to the lies are satirical. Here’s the truth.

Not many people go back and read books written 100 years ago or even 10 years ago. In fact, even if they did, not every book is valid for today. I’m sure we could learn about some business practices from honest men and women from the 1800s, but they certainly can’t tell us much about business in the modern age or modern marketing. Even books written in the 1990s are out of date for that now. Fiction is a little different, but even that has its place. There are many books no one wants to read, even if they are written well, because our modern minds can’t get past the bigotry or prejudice that the author or characters have. They don’t want to read through the strange way people spoke or the long sentences and descriptions that the author writes. Lots of books seem old and unappealing to many modern readers.

You have a unique voice and a unique story, even if the theme isn’t new. Love isn’t new. Business isn’t new. Raising kids isn’t new. Perhaps only scientists could write about something really new, but the truth is even though the theme or concept isn’t new, you are new. You have never been here in the world writing with your unique voice, thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Your book will be different because you are different.

With 7 billion people in the world, there are enough for you to have a large enough fan base for your book. Sure, other people are ahead of you. But if people liked a book that follows your theme, then they’ll probably like your book. They might even jive with you better and become your super fan! You never know.

There are enough people for everyone to have readers, but the main thing to remember is:

No one will be able to read your book and become a fan if you don’t WRITE the book. So start writing!
