Reader’s Digest Childhood

Anyone remember Reader’s Digest? That mini-sized magazine that used to come in the mail? My grandmother used to subscribe to them and I LOVED them. It would always be so sad once I had read through the latest edition from front to back.

I always started at the funny stories. I loved reading the jokes, of course, but I especially enjoyed the true stories of life just being funny. The other stories, though typically more serious were last on my list, but I still liked reading them. Especially because they just didn’t take too long to read. And they weren’t hard to understand.

There were some other magazines when I was growing up who would give a chance to people writing fiction short stories and publish them in their magazine. Unfortunately they were few and far between. I later found those literary magazines, but $20 or $30 a month for a subscription was too much for me as a teenager and college student.
I wonder what the kids these days will remember with nostalgia? Their tablets?
